They can be so intimidating, these empty pages waiting to get filled. Sometimes I know that there are certain words that fit the page, but I can’t bring them to mind. Like when you have a word on the tip of your tongue, but can’t think of it for the life of you. What do you do?
I don’t yet know the formula for bringing these words up from wherever they lie, through the ink, onto the page. But sometimes the magic happens, and when you take a step back, the page is filled, and a beautiful song has just been written.
It comes from the deep of your heart, telling a story of something. Everything about it is a story. The words, melodies, chords, phrasing, intonation, they all are part of the story. That’s what I’ve been learning lately, and I believe it’s helped me write better songs. Don’t write just for the sake of writing, write to tell a story. There are an infinite amount of stories in us, and they just need some medium to be told through. For me, I tell through song. Some tell through cans of paint on a canvas. Some tell through pages of a book. Some through spoken word. It doesn’t matter how you tell your story, it just matters that it’s being told.
Everyone has stories. What are yours? How do you tell them?
